Highland vegetables from a group of 30 Kundasang smallholders, graded and trucked to hotels and restaurants in Kota Kinabalu.
Mesilau Valley Growers is a growers' association that pools harvests from about 30 family farms on the slopes around Kundasang. Members grow cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, capsicum, carrots, lettuce and spring onions, with strawberries in season. Produce is sorted and graded at a shared packing shed, which lets small farms meet hotel specifications.
A chilled lorry runs down to Kota Kinabalu five days a week, supplying hotels, Chinese restaurants and wholesalers at the city markets. The association also takes standing weekly orders from resorts in Ranau and Kota Belud.
